If there's a song on Monarch which has been through the most changes, it's definitely track eight, All I Know. It started with a chorus, which I then wrote two or three sets of verses for over a period of months before deciding on what I wanted. Then, once I got into the recording process, it went through four or five dramatic changes in style before finally ending up as the track that you'll hear on the album. I wish I could get back half the hours I spent trying to get it to work, but at the same time I'm really pleased with the end result. I also had the great and unexpected privilege of having the crazy talented Shaun Kirsten drop in to lay down some guest vocals on this one, too, so that's pretty exciting!
So I pretty much never write love songs, but the one time I do, I write it about a church. Classic Joel. :P
This song is inspired by and dedicated to my amazing family at Northreach in Townsville, who have been faithful friends over the past nearly six years, and have proven that faithfulness over and over again during the last twelve months, welcoming me back in and giving me a place and a purpose within the church community. And equally, it's inspired by the One in whom we've placed our shared faith, whose plans aren't always easy to see, but who always seems to have a way of working things together for tremendous good.
