about

This has been a really fun song to work with - and I think it's just a really fun song in general! The story behind it is a bit unusual though, in that I realised pretty late in the album-writing process that I didn't really have a strong choice for the first track, and wrote this song quite deliberately to fill that perceived gap.

That approach bothered me a bit (is it really genuine enough if I'm just writing it for lack of an album opener?), but funnily enough the song didn't end up feeling forced at all, the lyrics seemed to flow out onto the page pretty readily, and I think I managed to finish the song more or less overnight, making it one of the quickest writing processes of any track on the album.

The chorus was heavily inspired by a quote from the late Christopher Hitchens, who wrote: "Never be a spectator of unfairness or stupidity. Seek out argument and disputation for their own sake; the grave will supply plenty of time for silence."

Make what you will of a song inspired by the words of a man who, based on the context of the quote in question alone, would probably have had serious concerns about at least a good 70-80% of the lyrical content of this album; it's still good fun, and I hope it inspires you to go out and carpe some diems.

lyrics

Do you remember back before we grew so weary
In a world that we could change so full of opportunity
Somewhere along the way we lost that vision
But now I wonder if you’d dare to dream again
with me...

To set a spark inside your heart
Now spreading through you like a wildfire
Tell me right now what would it take for you to burn

If today is all we have let's make it count for something
Let's send the world a message they'll remember when we're gone
There'll be time enough for silence when we're dead and buried
So while we've air left in our lungs let's live this life out loud

These days the world seems to be so confusing
It's hard to know which road to take or what's worth fighting for
It's time to stand up for what we believe in
Let's take this chance to lay it all on the line
one more time...
